first roman coin and some beach detecting

today using my garrett euroace 350 I found my first roman coin!!! my friend Neil took me to a field he has permission to detect on, he found 2 decent romans and an old one pence piece and I found my first which is rough but am happy with my first piece of bronze especially when you imagine I'm the first person to handle it in ~1600 years. After 1hr 1/2 hrs in the field we went to the beach, Neil nearly blanked other than 5p, mike (great guy from skegness) had ~20 coins and I came home with £1.43 in change including my second 'quid' coin AND an old one pence so a great days hunting. |

Metal Detector Enthusiasts Find Large Hoard of Roman Coins at Brendon Hill Worcestershire

Jethro Carpenter, 43, and Mark Gilmore, 47, discovered more than 3800 coins in a clay pot at Bredon Hill, near Evesham. Carpenter said "On the day of the discovery my detector was down for no more than five minutes when it started to make a high-pitched noise. Even more excitingly, the screen flashed up 'overload". I'd have to agree, to get a high signal accompanied by an overlaod display, yeah that'd get my adrenaline pumping. We're not talking a low tone from an aluminum can here, accompanied by an overload tone. We're talking that high coin tone sort of thing. Carpenter went on to say "Mark and I started digging and uncovered coin after coin. It was so exciting, my heart was racing" Can you just imagine? Take your last pocket spill and times that buy about a million and you might get close to the excitement that must have been felt by Carpenter and Gilmore. Carpenter continued "I've known Bredon Hill for 20 years and taken my metal detector there countless times, so never in a million years did I expect to come across such a find," I've seen this quite a lot lately in the news. Guys talking about how they've hunted a plot of land for 10, 15, 20 years and then out of nowhere they pull some amazing finds. Libyan Capital Museum Reopens

Archaeologists with Tripoli's Assaraya Al Hamra museum say they are now finally able to show off the country's treasures. Despite the unrest that has swept cities across the north African country, museum workers say they managed to save hundreds of artifacts, which include statues and coins that date back to Roman times, from looters. Ramadan Sheban, director of the Tripoli Archaeology Department said, "We have managed to create a comprehensive plan to protect Assaraya Alhamra Museum and the Museum of Libya in Tripoli in order to hide all pieces that I mentioned. We have managed to hide about 350 pieces of sculptures and pottery from Assaraya Alhamra. In addition to that, we managed to protect more than 2000 pieces of silver, bronze and old coins which are dated to different historical eras," Anti-Qaddafi forces captured Tripoli on August 23 after six months of civil war, ending Muammar Qaddafi's 41-year reign. But archaeologists are concerned about museums in other cities, and fear that the country's rich heritage could be destroyed. He added,"Currently, we are extremely worried about the museum in Bani Walid. We heard in the news, and some of our friends told us as well, that Qaddafi troops, troops of destruction and horror, are still there and they are using the museum.
